Each session is typically 15 minutes or less and the program is designed to be used 5 days a week to finish in 12 weeks. However, some have used the program 3 to 4 times a week, as life can be busy, and students have still made excellent progress. For best results, the key is to make sure the program is used several times every week.
This program is intended to have an adult sit with the student to ensure they stay on task and are truly visualizing.
There is a program for 3rd/4th graders and a program for 5th/6th graders, but ages 7 1/2 to adult use the programs as the concept is the same for all ages.
Yes. A reading comprehension program for 7th - 12th graders will be available in the future.
Looking up is very important! Looking up accesses the seeing part of the brain which students that don’t visualize consistently need to develop. Because these students don’t have a lot of neurological pathways developed in this part of the brain, looking up can feel like walking uphill on a dirt hiking trail that not many have used. Over time it becomes easier, usually in just a few sessions, and the goal is for visualizing and looking up to become a habit so the brain will take over in time and students will do it without realizing it.
We are happy to have designed the program so that it can be purchased one time and the whole family can use it – there is not a separate fee for each user. If several students can use the program at the same time without distracting each other, then using the program as a group would be fine. If the students are distracting each other, or use the program at different speeds, then it would be best to have each student do it individually.
We recommend completing the program before school, if possible, or before homework. Visualizing is a foundational skill and it is very helpful to do a lesson before homework, as people have reported that students think about visualizing more when they do their homework or schoolwork after completing a lesson. Students also retain and learn the skill more quickly when they complete a lesson when they are less fatigued, as opposed to doing a lesson when they are exhausted after finishing their homework. Students also feel more positive about the program when adults are positive about the program and make it a priority.
People have reported gains in reading and listening comprehension, better retention of sight words and other common words which has led to increased reading speed and accuracy for some, improved spelling and vocabulary skills, better attention skills, improved ability to follow directions, more enjoyment of reading, better grades, more independence with school work, increased confidence and feeling more positive about school and school work. Please see the Research and Data page for specific gains students have made with reading comprehension.
Those with very low reading skills can still use this program. There is very little actual reading in the program and the adult helper can do the reading for the student. This concept applies to listening comprehension as well so all students can benefit from learning this technique. After finishing this technique, it will be much easier for students to understand and remember audio books.
